The Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology under the Russian Health Ministry has developed the Sputnik V Covid vaccine. The new Russian COVID-19 vaccine is named as Sputnik V based on the successful launch of the first space satellite by the Soviet Union reinvigorated space research around the world in 1957. Moreover, to date, about 165 different vaccines for COVID-19 have been developed across the globe. The primary types of vaccines include vector, inactivated, nucleic acid-based (DNA and mRNA), and recombinant protein-based vaccines.
The Sputnik V vaccine has gone through all stages of pre-clinical trials along with the experiments on different types of animals, including 2 types of primates before the start of clinical trials. Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials of the vaccine were completed on 1st August 2020. Post-registration clinical trials have been launched in Russia involving more than 40,000 people in the second week of August 2020. In addition, many countries including UAE, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, and possibly India and Brazil are in discussion to join the clinical trials of Sputnik V locally. The vaccine has received the registration certificate from the Russian Ministry of Health on 11th August 2020 and can be used to vaccinate the population in Russia under emergency rules adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic. With this registration, Russia has become the first country to license a Covid-19 vaccine.
Furthermore, in October 2020, the human trials of the Sputnik V Covid vaccine have started in the UAE following the launch of trials in Belarus. The information was given in a statement by the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan on Monday i.e. 12th October 2020. Moreover, United Arab Emirates (UAE) has registered 109K total cases inclusive of 100K recovered and 448 deaths. In addition, Belarus has a total of 84,524 cases inclusive of 77,797 recovered cases and 906 registered deaths. Going further, trials are also expected to begin in Venezuela soon. Also, Venezuela has a total of 84,391 Covid-19 cases inclusive of 710 death and 76,262 recovered
Meanwhile, Russia has a total of 1.34 million Covid-19 cases including 1.04 million recovered and 23,205 registered deaths to date. Whereas, worldwide registered Covid-19 cases are 38.2 million including 26.5 million recovered and 1.09 million registered deaths.
